What is Carbon Black and its Production Methods?
Carbon black is an amorphous black powder composed of extremely fine carbon particles, typically produced through the thermal decomposition or incomplete combustion of hydrocarbon materials under controlled conditions. The main production methods include the Furnace Process (the most common industrial method), Thermal Process, Channel Process, and Acetylene Process etc. In each of these methods, parameters such as temperature, fuel type, and oxygen levels are carefully controlled to produce ultra-fine carbon particles.
Properties and Applications of Carbon Black
Carbon black is known for its deep black color, high tinting strength, excellent UV absorption, and distinctive physical properties such as its reinforcing capability and ability to enhance mechanical performance. Its primary application is in the tire industry, where it reinforces rubber and improves abrasion resistance. Additionally, it is widely used in paints, coatings, printing inks, color masterbatches, plastics, electrical components, and UV-protective coatings. Certain grades also exhibit high electrical conductivity, making them suitable for antistatic components and battery production.
Furnace Black
It includes ASTM codes such as N220, N330, N550, and N660 etc. This is the most widely used type of carbon black, and due to its good controllability of particle size and structure, it is extensively applied in tires, plastics, and paints. Among the most commonly used are the following:
N330
Particle size: 30 nm.
Feature: Excellent balance of tinting strength, reinforcing ability, and processability.
Application: Tires, shoe soles, foams, and industrial rubber parts.
N550
Particle size: 55 nm.
Feature: Very good processability with good crack resistance.
Application: Tires, hoses, shoe soles, and gaskets.
N660
Particle size: 60 nm.
Feature: High crack resistance with a slightly lower black shade.
Application: Hoses, belts, gaskets, and truck tires.
