However, most of the sulfur used in industry today is obtained as a byproduct from the processing of natural gas and crude oil. During gas sweetening and oil refining, sulfur-containing compounds such as hydrogen sulfide (H\u2082S) and mercaptans are removed. Its most important application is in the production of sulfuric acid, which serves as the foundation for many chemical and industrial processes. Sulfur also plays a critical role in agriculture for manufacturing sulfur-based fertilizers and improving the pH of alkaline soils, in the rubber industry for vulcanization, as well as in the production of detergents, paper, paints, resins, and even in pharmaceuticals and water treatment.
